Crypto Promoter “Bitcoin Rodney” Faces Expanded Charges in $1.8B HyperFund Scheme
Rodney Burton, the 56-year-old crypto promoter known as "Bitcoin Rodney," now faces significantly heightened legal jeopardy. Federal prosecutors in Maryland have unsealed a superseding indictment accusing him of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering, and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business.
The charges stem from Burton's alleged involvement in HyperFund, a cryptocurrency scheme that reportedly defrauded investors of $1.8 billion through false promises of returns and blocked withdrawals. Where the original January 2024 complaint carried five-year maximum penalties, the new charges expose Burton to up to 20 years imprisonment per wire fraud count.
Prosecutors successfully argued for Burton's detention as a flight risk after his arrest at Miami International Airport, where he allegedly attempted to depart on a one-way ticket. The case underscores regulators' increasing scrutiny of cryptocurrency promotion activities that cross into alleged fraud territory.
